American Flag Crayon Art

So, I was finally able to create a new piece to hang up for my future apartment and I actually really like it. I'm glad I was able to make crayon art because I've always wanted to try it out. This project may look easy, but it was a lot more messier and difficult than it looks. At first, it looked like a big glob of wax, but after a little while paint and more colors it came out the way I wanted it to be. This project took me a lot longer than I expected and I even had my brother help me!

Supplies Needed:
  • Blank Canvas
  • White Paint (acrylic)
  • Lots of Crayons
  • Blow Dryer
  • Painters Tape

I had so many issues while doing this project and so that might have been why it took so long. It probably was because I had all the supplies, but not the correct supplies.

First make sure you do this in an environment to avoid the mess. The wax gets everywhere!
Use the painters tape to create a American Flag look onto the canvas.

I didn't take pictures of my process, but I found a good example how to set up your canvas on this blog. It's not the same DIY, but the same concept.

After that, I began peeling the paper from the crayons so that I can easily melt the crayons over the canvas.  This part took the longest, since I had so many crayons to peel. I ended using the red, pink, and purple crayons for the stripes.

Once all the crayons are peeled, the next part is the fun part---melting the crayons! I used a fork to move it around the canvas, although it didn't work as how I expected to. I suggest using something to move the crayons because it gets really hot.

Use a blow dryer on high heat and begin melting the crayons onto the white parts of the canvas. You can use the blow dryer to move the melted wax in directions where you want. I used mainly red crayons and added purple and pink in various areas. It created a looks that made the stripes look like a cool texture. Once that had died, I removed all the painters tape and applied new tape around the rectangle to avoid blue paint melting with the red stripes. I used blue, purples, and green for the rectangle.

Lastly, I removed all the painters tape and used white paint to cover up any flaws in the white stripes and added dots to the blue.

It took a few hours, but it was fun in the end. At first, my family thought it looked bad, but once it was done everyone thought it was cool. I'm so excited to hang it up, some lights around it would look amazing on my wall.
