DIY: Watercolor Pillow

This project was one of my favorites. I originally bought a plain pillow of the Eiffel Tower for my dorm, but it turned out to be more colorful than that! This DIY was pretty simple and really fun once I figured out how I wanted it to look. It took about 45-60 minutes for me to finish the entire project and was completly dry in about a half hour.

Supplies Needed:

  • White or plain pillow
  • Different colors of acrylic paint
  • Cup of water
  • Paint brushes/sponges
  • Rhinestones (optional)
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

That's literally all you need!!

So, I started of with mixing the paint with water so that it looked as if it was actual watercolor paints. I didn't use watercolors because the paint is very faint and I wanted it to stand out and be permanent.

I used only five colors: pink, mint green, violet, light blue, and a neon orange. First, I used the paint brushes to make paint splatters on the pillow, but it was very faint so I had to continue splattering throughout. Then, I began to use the paint brushes to try to mock watercolor designs, but it wasn't working out the way I wanted and caused a big blob of colors on the left side of the pillow (pictured above).

    Inspiration of watercolors:

Anyway, I used various sized brushes to add the stroke of the exploding blob of paint and guess what? It worked out well! After, I was using these sponges to try to provide different textures, but those weren't working as well as I predicted. So, instead, I used a paper towel through the rest of the painting. Basically, the entire texture was used by wetting a paper towel and brushing the paint on the pillow.

The hardest part was glueing the rhinestones onto the outline of the Eiffel Tower. It was the most tedious step of them all, but in the end my pillow looks amazing and I've recieved so many compliments!
